MULTIDISCIPLINARY ROADBLOCK STRENGTHENS ROAD SAFETY ON R40 IN BUSHBUCKRIDGE

A multidisciplinary law enforcement operation conducted along the R40 at Ramalema in Bushbuckridge Local Municipality has strengthened efforts to promote road safety, combat crime and improve public health services as part of October Transport Month.

The operation, led by the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison (DCSSL), brought together traffic and road safety officials, the South African Police Service (SAPS), Bushbuckridge Local Municipality, the Department of Home Affairs and the Department of Health.

Executive Mayor of Bushbuckridge, Cllr Matlanatso Lydia Moroane-Zitha, also joined the operation and participated in the parade, demonstrating the municipality's commitment to promoting road safety and ensuring compliance with traffic laws.

Traffic Compliance and Law Enforcement

During the operation, 334 vehicles were stopped, resulting in 52 traffic summonses valued at R39,750.

The Public Transport Inspectorate inspected 50 minibuses and issued penalties amounting to R31,500. An additional R3,100 was collected through Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) activities, commonly referred to as Nyamsoro operations.

As part of crime prevention efforts, SAPS members searched 28 vehicles and 53 passengers to deter criminal activities and the unlawful transportation of goods or individuals.

The Department of Home Affairs also conducted verification checks on 38 drivers and 221 passengers, identifying 13 undocumented passengers.

Health Services Provided to the Public

Beyond traffic enforcement and crime prevention, the operation incorporated essential healthcare services aimed at improving access to basic health screenings.

The Department of Health conducted 40 consultations, including 35 hypertension screenings, 33 blood sugar checks and 35 general health assessments.

Three individuals identified as being at high risk were placed on controlled diets as part of efforts to manage their health conditions.

The healthcare team also conducted 16 HIV screenings, initiated seven people on pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to reduce their risk of HIV infection, distributed 10 HIV self-test kits and confirmed two pregnancies.

Commitment to Safer Roads and Healthier Communities

The multidisciplinary operation demonstrated the importance of cooperation between government departments and law enforcement agencies in addressing road safety, crime prevention, regulatory compliance and public health challenges.

Through initiatives such as these, the provincial government continues to encourage responsible road use, strengthen law enforcement and bring essential services closer to communities.

The operation formed part of broader October Transport Month activities aimed at raising awareness about road safety and promoting safer travel for all road users.
