More than 200 social aid packages and food parcels have been donated and distributed to vulnerable community members through a collaborative initiative led by the Mpumalanga Department of Social Development, under the leadership of MEC Nompumelelo Hlophe.

The initiative was supported by the National Lotteries Commission, the South African Red Cross and Bushbuckridge Local Municipality, demonstrating a collective commitment to supporting disadvantaged households.

The donated packages included 10kg bags of maize meal and rice, toiletries, blankets, kitchen sets, mattresses, milk packs, canned food, juice and vouchers worth R2,500 per beneficiary, redeemable at grocery stores.

The event was attended by Ward Councillor Mabunda, Chairperson of the Women’s Commission Cllr A. Mathebula, officials from the Department of Social Development and the municipality, alongside community members.

Welcoming MEC Hlophe, the delegation of donors and residents, MMC for Social Development Services Cllr Mathebula urged beneficiaries and community members to appreciate the support provided through the initiative.

She highlighted the importance of the partnership, noting that the involvement of the National Lotteries Commission and the South African Red Cross had come at a critical time for vulnerable households.

Addressing community members, MEC Hlophe welcomed the collaboration between her department, the donors and Bushbuckridge Local Municipality. She emphasised the importance of strengthening and sustaining public-private partnerships to ensure that assistance reaches those who need it most.

The MEC also called for responsible use of social grants, cautioning beneficiaries against spending the funds on items and activities unrelated to their intended purpose.

She reiterated that the Department of Social Development has a responsibility to protect vulnerable individuals and families and ensure they receive the necessary support to improve their living conditions.

The initiative highlights the importance of cooperation between government, humanitarian organisations and local authorities in addressing poverty, alleviating hardship and promoting the well-being of vulnerable communities.
